The History of Wampum Wampum comes from the New England region of the North Atlantic. The sacred shell beads and wampum jewelry are used by Eastern Woodland tribes. The white and dark purple shell beads are made from the quahog shell. Wampum is traditionally used for marriage and other ceremonies. It was not used as a currency until colonists came to the shores of the Atlantic and realized how much wampum meant to the Eastern Tribes and began to use it as an exchange for items, wampum became Americas first currency. Wampum should be used as currency once again because it can retain its value much more so than the current U.S. dollar. Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation
